Kat sat at the kitchen table, a dull ache in her head as if it had settled in for the day. She had an hour before she had to pick up Tom from Lauren’s house and her hangover clung on despite taking two lots of paracetamol.

The sharp ring of the doorbell made her jump. She pushed her chair back, heart thudding a little too fast in her chest, and opened the door to find Kevin and Vicky standing on the porch; the last people she expected, or indeed, wanted to see. Kevin wore a tense smile, while Vicky’s expression was unreadable, her eyes darting over Kat as though assessing her.

“Kevin,” Kat said, surprised. What did they want? The last time they’d spoken had been strained, to say the least.

“Can we talk?” Kevin asked. “About my job?”

Kat stiffened. She glanced at Vicky in the background, her face giving nothing away. Kat hadn’t forgotten the phone call the day after letting Kevin go, the thinly veiled threat of retribution and a suggestion about her aunt being onto something. It had seemed almost absurd at the time, but now, seeing them standing there together, something about the way Vicky stared made the memory more sinister.

“Come in,” Kat said, stepping aside. As she shut the door, she was convinced she saw movement from the house opposite.

They moved into the living room. Kevin took a seat after Kat gestured, but Vicky stood with her arms crossed, looking out of the window as if she suspected prying eyes too.

“I want my job back,” Kevin said bluntly, staring directly at Kat. “I’ve had time to think, and I know I messed up, and I’d like another opportunity.”

Kat sat down across from him, her mind racing. Yes, the business needed help, but taking Kevin Doyle back? Not a fucking chance.

“I’m sorry, Kevin,” Kat said carefully, trying to keep her voice steady. “I can’t offer you your position back. Things have changed since you left. We’ve taken someone else on.”

Vicky turned from the window, speaking for the first time. “Who? They can’t be as good as Kevin, and we know you need help.”

Kat blinked, taken aback by the sudden venom in Vicky’s tone. “That’s not true. We are coping just fine on—”

“Oh, please,” Vicky cut her off. “We know about your parents, about how little time you can give the business.”

Kat stood, facing Vicky at the same height at least helping her feel less vulnerable. “How the hell do you know about my parents?”

Vicky laughed, prompting Kevin to stand and join his girlfriend. He whispered something in her ear before turning to face Kat once more. His tone was much more neutral. “Please, Kat. We need the money. I thought I’d easily find another job, but there just aren’t the roles out there anymore.”

“I’m sorry, Kevin,” Kat replied, her eyes focused on Kevin once more while trying to ignore the stares of Vicky from behind. How on earth did she expect Kat to allow Kevin back with her threats and accusations? “We have all the staff we need.
